Welcome to the Red
Rose Rock Shop & Dick's Rock Museum
"Rough Rock S-T" page.
Here
you will find rough
rocks from around the World!
Most
of our rough rock is used in landscaping, fountains, aquariums, waterfalls,
rock gardens and other landscaping projects, and for the metaphysical
properties. We also offer rough rock
that is often used for ornamental purposes such as carvings, bookends, spheres,
in jewelry, and is great rough for cabbing.
Unless
otherwise noted, all rough rock is priced per pound and the image is
representative of the material on hand.

$2.00/lb
Selenite
is a type of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulphate, usually transparent and
colorless, and is soft with a hardness of 2.
These
clear, layered Selenite pieces are from Utah.
The
name selenite comes from the Greek words "selene" meaning "moon,"
and "lithos" meaning "stone," because it was believed to wax and
wane with the moon.
Metaphysically
speaking, selenite is known to help with awareness, understanding the
deeper meaning in any given situation, strengthening decisions, and
encourages good business practices. It is said to align the spine, benefit
the skeleton, neutralize mercury poisoning and decrease epilepsy and
seizures.

Selenite
is a type of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulphate, usually transparent and
colorless, and is soft with a hardness of 2.
These
Selenite logs are amazing pieces from Africa.
They
range from 3"-8" in diameter and
10"-22" in length.
To get an idea, the following is a
sample of some approximate weights.
A
6"x10" log = 13 pounds, a 4"x12" log = 9 pounds and, a
6"x20" log = 33 pounds.
Remember,
rough rock is sold by the pound.

Slag Glass

$3.00/lb
What
is Slag Glass? Partly vitrified
non-metal residue and waste material left behind after the smelting of a metal ore or in glassmaking and has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.
This Slag Glass which is
available in a
rainbow of transparent and opaque colors,
are remnants from a
glass factory in Pennsylvania.
Vitrification is a process of converting
a material into a glass-like amorphous
solid that is free from any crystalline structure, either by the quick removal or addition of heat, or by mixing with an
additive. When the starting
material is solid, vitrification usually involves heating the substances to
very high temperatures. Many ceramics are produced in such a manner. Vitrification
can occur naturally when lightning strikes sand creating hollow, branches of glass, called fulgurite.

Sodalite

$4.00/lb
Sodalite
is a sodium aluminum silicate chloride, in the feldspathoid group, and has a
hardness of 5.5 to 6. Distinguished by its rich royal blue color, sodalite can also be
yellow, green, or violet and is often mottled with white veins or patches.
These
sodalite specimens are a gorgeous royal blue
to a very dark blue with white
veining,
comes from
Brazil and is great rough for cabbing.
Sodalite
gets its name for its high sodium content. It is similar to lazurite and lapis lazuli however, unlike sodalite,
lapis has pyrite inclusions.
Metaphysically
speaking, sodalite is known to increase self-esteem, creativity,
communication, to eliminate confusion, bring peace of mind and to assist in
spiritual growth. It can be placed on or near electronic equipment to clear
electromagnetic toxins. It is said to improve calcium deficiencies, strengthen the lymph
system, relieve insomnia and damage from radiation.

Tourmaline

$3.00/lb
Tourmaline,
a complex silicate mineral, has a wide variety of colors. Usually,
iron-rich tourmalines are black to bluish-black (schorl) to deep brown (dravite),
while magnesium-rich varieties are brown to yellow, and lithium-rich
tourmalines are practically any color: blue, green, red, yellow, pink
etc., in hexagonal crystal structures, and has a hardness of 7 to 7.5.
These Tourmaline specimens
occasionally show
botroydal formations (bubble-like) and come from Brazil.
The
name Tourmaline has two derivatives, both from the Sinhalese word "turamali,"
meaning "stone attracting ash" referring to its pyroelectric
properties (when the crystal is heated it gives a positive charge at one end
of the crystal and a negative charge at the other) , or according to other
sources it means "mixed gemstones". Tourmaline has many
technological uses due to its piezoelectric properties, (an electrical
charge can be created by simply applying pressure to the crystal on the
vertical axis), which is useful in measuring equipment and other scientific
applications.
Metaphysically
speaking, black tourmaline, is known to be a very protective stone,
purifying, deflecting and transforming negative energy for an individual or
environment, and is excellent for grounding excess energy. It is also used to deflect radiation from tv's and computer monitors.
It is said to strengthen the immune system, help with heart disease,
arthritis, and gout.

Agate

$3.00/lb
Turritella
agate is a type of fossil, petrified snails, where all the organic matter
was replaced with quartz, so has a hardness of 7.
This
Turritella agate exhibits an amazing amount of fossils,
comes from Wyoming
and is great rough for cabbing.
Turritella
agates are actually fossilized Goniobasis gastropods. They lived about 50 million years ago. The shell of this snail had a small, tapering spire with many spirals
and grew up to 1 1/2" long. The shell material has been completely
replaced by agate while retaining dramatic spiral patterns.
Metaphysically
speaking, turitella agate is said to dispel a superiority complex, help with
transitions and give insight in knowing that all is well, regardless of the
outcome. It
also helps with calming, reduces fatigue and is helps stomach issues.
